Hand two people the same bottle of ylang ylang and you'll often get two completely different reactions — one leans in, the other wrinkles their nose. That's not pickiness. It's biology.
Your nose is unlike anyone else's
Humans carry roughly 400 functional olfactory receptors, and research from the Monell Chemical Senses Center has found that small genetic variations in these receptor genes mean the same odour molecule can register very differently from person to person — sometimes registering as floral to one nose and barely there to another. It's part of why generic, one-size-fits-all fragrance gifting so often misses the mark, and why scent, more than most senses, resists a single "right" answer.
This is the idea behind Hyuuga's workshops. Instead of handing guests a finished product, each session is built around helping people discover what their own nose actually responds to — with guidance from a scent artist, but no fixed formula to follow.
What actually happens in a session
Every workshop follows a similar rhythm, whatever the format. Guests are walked through a short introduction to aromatherapy and the essential oil families, then move into open exploration — smelling through a curated range of oils, noting instinctive reactions, and narrowing down to the notes that genuinely stand out to them. From there, a scent artist helps translate those instincts into an actual recipe: ratios, layering, balance. It's part science, part storytelling, and it usually surprises people — the scent they walk away with is rarely the one they expected to like going in.
It's a format that's become a favourite for date ideas in Singapore, small celebrations, and anyone who wants a slower, more sensory afternoon than the usual café catch-up.
Three ways to blend
Hyuuga runs three workshop formats, each suited to a different kind of scent (and a different kind of person):
Eau De Parfum Workshop — The signature session. Guests work with a mix of essential and fragrance oils, exploring 24 different aromas before building a personal 30ml eau de parfum. Because fragrance oils are in the mix alongside essential oils, the scent range is wider — this is the format for anyone chasing a specific "signature scent" feel, with the therapeutic backbone of essential oils still built in.
Essential Oil Blend Workshop — An all-essential-oil format, yielding a 10ml blend guests can use exactly like any other essential oil — in a diffuser, diluted for a bath, or on a warm compress. A good entry point for anyone newer to aromatherapy who wants something functional as much as fragrant.
Natural Mist Workshop — Also entirely essential-oil based, with no synthetic fragrance, formulated as a safe, natural mist for rooms, pillows, or as a light body spray. This one tends to suit guests blending for sleep, calm, or a specific space in their home rather than for themselves as "perfume."
Finding your format
The easiest way to decide isn't the scent itself — it's where you'll actually use it. If you're reaching for a diffuser most days, the Essential Oil Blend leans that way. If it's your pillow, your linen, or a room that needs freshening up, that's Natural Mist territory. And if you want something you'll dab on and wear, the Eau De Parfum format is built for that. Start with the habit, and the right workshop tends to follow.
Choosing on someone else's behalf is trickier, since you're guessing at both their habits and their nose. That's where Hyuuga's Ritual Finder Quiz is genuinely useful — a few quick questions to help point toward a scent profile that suits the person you're gifting for, rather than picking blind.
Singapore's wellness scene has no shortage of ready-made products. What a workshop offers instead is time — an hour or two to actually notice what you're drawn to, rather than choosing off a shelf. Given how differently each of us is wired to smell the world, that's arguably the only way to get a scent that's genuinely yours.
